FIRST "ORGANIC" MEMBER INSTALLED AS 5TH MASTER OF MODEL LODGE

Bro. Sergio R. Francisco was recently installed as the Lodge's 5th Master in a ceremony presided over by Installing Officer Bro. Rodel T. Matias with Bros. Anselmo P. Syegco, Jr. and Narciso M. Salvador as Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Master of Ceremonies, respectively.

Thus, Brother Sergio became the Lodge's Centennial Master and its first organic or regular member to be installed as such. Also installed with him are Bro. Aquilino M. Valino, Jr. as Senior Warden, Bro. Shubert L. Ciencia as Junior Warden, and other officers of the Lodge for Masonic Year 2012.

The installation rites was graced by Bro. Mayor Leonido M. de Guzman, Jr. of the Lodge's host municipality of Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija who himself is the incoming Master of Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73.

A PACKAGE OF HELP AND HOPE FOR MINDANAO

Several boxes of used clothes and food were donated by the Lodge to the continuing relief operations for the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Mindanao. The goods were turned over to Bro. Amidon P. Nicolas who will bring them to the brethren of Iligan Lodge No. 207 for distribution.

Breaking from tradition, Masonic District RIII-D held its annual commemoration of Bro. Dr. Jose P. Rizal's martyrdom at the grounds of the Gapan City Hall which also occasioned the inauguration of the National Hero's monument that was erected through the efforts of the General Llanera Memorial Lodge No. 168. Similar wreath offering ceremonies were previously held at the grounds of the Cabanatuan City Hall.

This year's commemoration rites was co-hosted by the Gapan City government under the leadership of Citys Mayor Christian Tinio who is shown speaking in the photo below, and past District Deputy Grand Master and City Vice-Mayor Bro. Rodel T. Matias (3rd from left) who is also shown with incumbent District Deputy Grand Master Bro. Mariolito O. Carlos (2nd from left) at the National Hero's new monument.

After the ceremonies, the newly elected Wardens and Masters of all Lodges under the jurisdiction of Masonic District RIII-D proceeded to the General Llanera Lodge No. 168 Masonic Temple where they took their proficiency examinations with the District Deputy Grand Master presiding as shown in the photo below. Masonic regulation requires that all incoming Wardens and Masters must pass the proficiency examination before they can be formally installed as such.

MORE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

As such, Model Lodge willingly accepted an invitation to be one of the patrons of a gift giving project for indigent families that was initiated by the Barangay Government of Baloc in the municipality of Sto. Domingo.

Lodge Master Bro. Marionito L. Guerrero personally handed several boxes of grocery goods to Barangay Captain Diacono Lee as its part in making the Holiday Season more meaningful to those who are less fortunate in life.

AFTER SMOKED FISH COMES THE FINGERLINGS

Some 10,000 tilapia fingerlings were recently turned-over by the Lodge to residents of Baloc's Sitio Bulihan in the municipality of Sto. Domingo. The Lodge hopes that the donation will help jump start a livelihood project for Sitio Bulihan that will follow the success of a similar project in Sitio Pudyot which is now producing smoked fish under the brand of "Pudyot Special Tinapa".

The fingerling donation was made possible through the generous assistance of Bro. Michael Valenzuela who is also Model Lodge's assigned Grand Lodge Inspector.

For Model Lodge, feeding a man means pots of freshly cookedchicken-and-rice congee fortified with powdered moringa leaves for theschoolchildren of the Rogelio DG Valdezotto Elementary School.

But mancannot leave by chicken-and-rice-congee alone so a team headed by Bro. AngelitoDela Cruz of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' (BFAR) AsianFisheries Academy of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute(AFA-NFRDI) came over and trained members of the school's Parents and TeachersAssociation in the art of smoked fish or tinapa production.

The ideais to introduce livelihood opportunities that will enable the schoolchildren'sparents to generate additional household income and therefore improve theirfamilies' quality of life. AFTER 4 YEARS, LODGE INTERNAL RULES IS REVIEWED AND UPDATED

When the founding Fathers named the Lodge as "Model", they were serious about it and drafted an internal rule based on the Landmarks of Freemasonry, and the Edicts and Constitution of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines to guide future brethren in practicing, upholding, and defending the tenets and principles of Freemasonry.

Four years after, the 23 sons of Model Lodge No. 373 since it was constituted in 2008 sat down to discuss, review, and update these internal rules and reaffirmed their solemn obligation to uphold the following guiding principles of the Lodge:

"This Lodge shall exist for the protection and welfare of its members and the communities where their families reside.

This Lodge will encourage the formation of appendant bodies to enhance the participation of the brethren’s immediate family in the practice and exemplification of the teachings and tenets of Freemasonry.

This Lodge shall be self-sustaining, self-developing, and self-enduring and will accept worthy and qualified men who will bring honor and dignity to Freemasonry with due priority to the brethren’s immediate family, relatives, and friends.

The brethren of this Lodge have faith in the Almighty, hope for immortality, and charity for all humanity and as such shall practice the greatest attribute of charity, and participate in all activities that will improve the lives of those who are marginalized, displaced, and sickly.

The brethren of this Lodge shall make available their resources, skills, and time to implement socio-economic projects for the benefit of the Lodge and welfare of the brethren, and as such shall establish a social enterprise which it shall supervise for this purpose.

The brethren of this Lodge shall strive to become model Masons and citizens, and shall therefore earnestly care for their families, do service for the community, and offer their talent to national development."

BOWLING 2011: FINALLY, WINS ON DAY 3 AND A CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH ON DAY 4

After wins against San Leonardo Lodge No. 386 and the Manuel L. Quezon Memorial Lodge No. 262, Model Lodge barged into the Championship Match to defend the Class D champion's crown it won in last year's edition. But that was not meant to be as back-to-back losses against a suddenly fighting San Leonardo Lodge No. 386 relegated Model Lodge to a runner-up finish. But all's well that ends well as the brethren retreated to the chic Rosenda's Restaurant not to lick their wounds but to celebrate. It was after all a job well done, and the Worshipful Master and Senior Warden's birthdays too!

FEEDING PROGRAM LAUNCHED

Domingo, Nueva Ecija during the launching of a 6-month supplementary feeding project that will benefit 138 pupils and their mothers. The project is initiated by Model Lodge and Worshipful Master Bro. Marionito Guerrero in partnership with the Baloc Local Government Unit and the support of the Order of the Amaranth's Royal Court No. 31 led by Royal Patron Bro. Prudencio Elegado (who is a past master of the Lodge) and Royal Matron Sis. Luisa Elegado, the Order's District 5 led by District Deputy Grand Royal Matron Sis. Jennifer Abalos-Martinez, and the Cabanatuan Bodies of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites led by Venerable Master Bro. Laverne Manangbao.

Post Script

After the feeding project, Brother Marionito in behalf of Model Lodge No. 373 turned-over a ceiling fan to the school teachers [first photo below]. Brother Prudencio in behalf of the Lodge, the Order of the Amaranth, and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites next turned-over a donation of P6,000.00 [last photo below] for the establishment of a safe water project in the school. Brother Laverne also promised to donate a water for the project which the Baloc Local Government Unit has also committed to support. The Parents-Teachers Association will also provide a counterpart to the project.

From Sitio Pudyot, Model Lodge next visited Bro. Antonio Pascual (Memorial Lodge No. 90) who has been a gracious supporter of the Lodge, then proceeded to Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija to visit the brethren of Apolinario Lodge No. 235.

MODEL LODGE HOSTS ORDER OF THE AMARANTH

No less than Grand Royal Matron Sis. Elenita David of the Order of the Amaranth's Grand Court of the Philippines came to orient the brethren and wives of Model Lodge about the Order's vision and program. The event [first photo] was held at the residence of Worshipful Master Bro. Marionito Guerrero who was a former Royal Matron of the Order, and was also attended by the Order's District 5 officers led by District Royal Matron Sis. Jenifer Martinez and District Royal Patron Bro. Val Santos who is a member of Model Lodge.

After the orientation, a mentoring session on the Third Degree of Masonry was conducted to the newly obligated brothers [second photo], followed by an orientation for the candidates (with their spouses) who are about to receive the First Degree of Masonry [third photo].

BOWLING 2011: THREE LOSSES BUT HAPPY ON DAY 1

Team Model Lodge lost 3 straight matches to powerhouses General Llanera Memorial Lodge No. 168, Cabanatuan Lodge No. 53, and Sta. Rosa Lodge No. 297 on the first day of the Masonic District RIII-D Inter-Lodge Bowling Tournament. But still, the brethren went home happy. They came to renew fraternal ties with other Lodges. Winning is but secondary.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

2011 BALER DISTRICT MEETING

It's off to Baler, Aurora again for Masonic District RIII-D's traditional meeting [first photo] during the installation rites for the Grand Lodge Inspector of the Manuel L. Quezon Memorial Lodge (MLQ) No. 262. The next day after the meeting, Model Lodge's delegation headed by Worshipful Master Bro. Marionito Guererro joined the District brethren in the annual mangrove planting project of MLQ No. 262 [second photo]. The trip was capped by bottle each of American whiskey, Chilean red wine, and German Riesling at Bro. Rafael Perez's place [third photo] on the way back to Nueva Ecija.

One hundred seedlings of narra and mahogany were recently turned-over by Model Lodge to the Rogelio DG Valdezotto Elementary School as part of of the Lodge's continuing work on climate change adaptation and mitigation. Aside from planting and donating seedlings, the Lodge is also contributing to the global work on climate change adaptation and mitigation through its incumbent secretary --- Bro. Shubert Ciencia --- who has been serving as an adviser and civil society representative to the Republic of the Philippines' delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Negotiations.

THE SUN SHINES ON BRO. JOSE RIZAL'S BIRTHDAY

Model Lodge joined Masonic District RIII-D led by District Deputy Grand Master Bro. Mariolito Carlos (with black hat in photo above) in commemorating the 150th birthday of Bro. Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, in ceremonies held at the grounds of the Cabanatuan City Hall. After the ceremony, the brethren visited the eldest brother of Bro. Eduardo Sayco who was hospitalized for an illness (second photo below), and accompanied the 10 army soldiers from nearby Fort Magsaysay who donated blood, through the facilitation of Bro. Capt. Erwin Macalinao (third photo below), for the surgery of Bro. Marciano Dela Cruz's son who is now home and recuperating.

The sunshiny day was capped by a call of the brethren to 1st District Rep. Josefina Joson and Quezon Mayor Cristino Joson (last photo below) who donated 200 bags of cement for the continuing construction of Model Lodge's Masonic temple. The donation was facilitated by Baloc Barangay Captain Diacono Lee who is a long time community services partner of the Lodge.

PLANT TREES, GIVE BOOKS

In support of the Grand Lodge of the Philippine's environmental conservation programs, some 200 mahogany and narra seedlings courtesy of Bro. Ronaldo Venturina (Pantabangan-Bonari Lodge No. 203) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources were recently planted by Model Lodge led by Worshipful Master Bro. Marionito Guerrero, the Order of Amaranth's Royal Court No. 31 led by Grand Patron Bro. Prudencio Elegado and Grand Matron Sis. Luisa Elegado, and Baloc barangay officials led by Barangay Captain Diacono Lee at the Lodge's Masonic temple grounds.

June being the start of the school year in the Philippines, the Model Lodge and its partners proceeded to the Rogelio DG Valdezotto Elemetary School in Sitio Pudyot, Baloc, Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija immediatley after the tree planting where school supplies were distributed to 138 pupils.

Model Lodge recently visited Bro. Anacleto Fernandez' mother who was confined at the Cabanatuan Dotors' Hospital due to heart problems, Bro. Angelito Dela Cruz' wife who underwent a surgical procedure at the Immaculate Conception Medical Center, and Bro. Errol Santiago who spent some days at the Heart of Jesus Hospital.

The brethren wishes them a fast and full recovery.

FEAST OF THE PASCHAL LAMB

The Feast of the Paschal Lamb commemorate the lamb offering of the Jews during the Passover or paschal feast. The practice has been adopted by the Ancient and and Accepted Scottish Rites of Freemasons and traditionally held every Maundy Thursday in the Philippines. The ceremonial feast features a symbolic banquet, the Mystic Roll Call of brothers who have been called to the Celestial Lodge, and a special Ceremony of the Lights.

Several members of Model Lodge, through the invitation of Lodge Master Bro. Marionito Guerrero, were fortunate to witness this very special ceremony that was held by the Munoz Bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites at Memorial Lodge No. 90.

REFLECTIONS OF A BLUE BOY AND A PROMISE (almost) KEPT

I am a Blue Boy.

Not those MMDA guys but of Model Lodge who were called as such by District Deputy Grandmaster Bro. Rodolfo Estrada for the blue suits we wore for this year’s installation rites.

The blue suits were a gift from Bro. Marionito Guerrero who, upon his installation as Master of Model Lodge, made a pact with us to attend all such rites within the Masonic District. And that means from the opening of the Lodges until the fellowships.

We were usually a car pool of two vehicles coming from the northern and southern parts of Nueva Ecija province.

We have assignments. We worked on schedules and rotations. Some have to file leaves of absence. Others have to go AWOL or drop commitments or delete schedules. It was tough sometimes. But were happier than blue.

It was at first a routine requirement for us. But we learned much at each installation and somehow developed a deeper appreciation on the ritual. Finally, it became our initiation into a broader fraternity beyond the confines our Lodge. We toasted, gut drunk, and made many friends on a first name basis. We finally let our hair down and with it our inhibitions. We are the blue boys and we are happily at ease now.

The Blue Boys were able to attend all 16 installations (including ours) within the District plus 4 more outside of it. We were there for the openings, stayed during the restrained moments, came back for the rites, listened to the speeches, and enjoyed the fellowships.

On a personal note, I made a promise last year to attend all 15 (minus ours) since I only made 6 then. I tried hard even if it meant wearing the same blue barong for 2 consecutive days at times. But I only made 13 (minus ours) because I got called to a conference in Batangas when the Blue Boys attended that of the manuel L. Quezon Memorial Lodge No. 262, and had to mind the kids as it was wife in conference when they went to San Leonardo Lodge No. 386.

But the Blue Boys were there, always there, and we are them.

Both of Nueva Ecija’s District Deputy Grandmasters and their Junior Grand Lecturers are present. So are key officers of the Order of Amaranth. The guest of honor and speaker is a past Grand Master and the incumbent Grand Secretary. And the multitude of brethren from various Lodges, friends from near and far, and family members who came filled the cavernous gymnasium of the Philippine Rice Research Institute.

It was indeed a moment of celebration as Bro. Marionito Guerrero’s Masonic journey finally came full circle as he was installed the 4th Master of Model Lodge No. 373.

Those who are familiar with Brother Marionito's Masonic career are aware of its twists and turns for rather than following a straight line to the East as would have been the case, his journey went around it having been chosen first to lead 2 prestigious Masonic appendant bodies. He served as the Venerable Master of the Munoz Bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites (A&ASR) in 2008 then Royal Patron of the Order of Amaranth’s Pantabangan-Bonari Court No. 46 the following year. His distinguished service to the 2 organizations earned him recognitions as an Outstanding Member of the A&ASR and Outstanding Royal Patron.

It was also a milestone of sorts as members of Model Lodge took center stage: District Deputy Grandmaster Bro. Jose Matutino, Jr. who led the contingent of Masonic District RIII-F and presented the Past Master’s jewel and apron to outgoing Master Bro. Manolo Mercado, Bro. Wilson Tan who presided over the installation rites, and Past Grand Master and incumbent Grand Secretary Bro. Danilo Angeles who is an honorary member and the acknowledged godfather of Model Lodge as the guest of honor and speaker.

The installation rites concluded with the presentation of plaques and certificates of appreciation to District Junior Grand Lecturer Bro. Dennis Villasenor and Bro. Ed Ang who served as the installation rites’ Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Master of Ceremonies, respectively; and to Bro. Ambrocio Palolan of Sta. Rosa LodgeNo. 297, Sto. Domingo mayor Bro. Leonido “Baby Boy” De Guzman of Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73, and members of Model Lodge for their support in the ongoing construction of the Lodge’s Masonic temple.

FINALLY, A DREAM COME TRUE FOR MODEL LODGE

It started as a dream. Then came the plan. Finally on October 31 this year, the brethren of Model Lodge No. 373 witnessed Sto. Domingo mayor Bro. Leonido De Guzman broke the ground to announce the construction of the Lodge’s Masonic temple in Baloc.

As the groundbreaking started, Brother Leonido who is the incumbent Junior Warden of Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73 was teased by Bro. Prudencio Elegado to dig a 1 meter hole to which the good mayor good naturedly responded that he is not a petitioner. Laughter filled the air as the temple ground was finally broken. Brother Leonido then committed his support to the project and expressed his happiness that a Masonic temple will finally be erected in his municipality and during his term. Immediately after the groundbreaking, the lay-outing of the temple foundations and the installation of batter boards proceeded.

October 31 is an ominous date for Model Lodge because it was the day of its institution way back in 2007 at Cabanatuan Lodge No. 53 which was presided by Grandmaster Jaime Gonzales. Among those who witnessed the institution rites were Grand Secretary Danilo Angeles, Grand Chaplain Manuel Palomo, Senior Grand Lecturer Flor Nicolas, District Deputy Grand Masters Emil Andrew Dela Rosa of Masonic District RIII-D and Celso Paderes of Masonic Disrict RIII-F, and other luminaries from other lodges. Brother Prudencio was then Worshipful Master with Bros. Narciso Nieto as Senior Warden and Anacleto Fernandez as the Junior Warden.

The temple will measure 15 meters in width and 33 meters long in reference to the Lodge’s 33 Charter Members as conceived by Brother Prudencio in a allusion to the highest degree of the thirty-third and last degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites of Freemasonry.

It will be a long way before the temple will be completed but such is not built instantly. Even King Solomon’s Temple took years to be constructed. Model Lodge is hopeful that its dream will be realized through the help of its members and the Good Samaritans among the brethren. Then it can be said that dreams can indeed turn to reality.

Worshipful Master Bro. Manolo Mercado led Model Lodge's contingent in the District Alternative Dispute Resolution seminar that was also attended by Junior Warden Bro. Sergio Francisco, the Lodge's immediate past Master Bro. Anacleto Fernandez who is currently assigned as the Grand Lodge Inspector for the Manuel L. Quezon Memorial Lodge No. 262, Bro. Val Santos who is the incumbent Master of the Moises J. De Guzman Memorial Lodge No. 161, Bro. Aquilino Valino Jr. who is touted as next year's Junior Warden, and Harmony Officer Bro. Monico Delgado.

Later in the afternoon, another contingent led by the Lodge Secretary Bro. Shubert Ciencia with Bros. Elpidio Dizon, Rafael Perez, Jojit Floro, and Fitzgerald Hierco arrived and participated in the Basic Floor Works workshop.

The basic architectural elements of Model Lodge's Masonic temple were finally firmed-up during a meeting of the Lodge's corporate arm --- the Moringa Technology Development and Resource Center, Inc. --- who will supervise its construction. The final architectural template was drawn from the template submitted by Bro. Darwin Pastor that was based on the proposed designs of Bros. Jose Matutino, Jr. and Reynaldo Villaflor. The final architectural plan will be presented during Model Lodge's stated meeting on October 2.

MODEL LODGE COMMEMORATE NATIONAL HEROES DAY

For this year’s National Heroes Day, District Deputy Grandmaster Bro. Alan Purisima has encouraged Lodges under the jurisdiction of Masonic District RIII-D to spruce up the monuments of heroes who are brother masons.

Model Lodge No. 373 for its part opted to conduct this activity at the Gen. Mariano Noriel Memorial Park at the Baloc Junction although it is not sure if he is a brother Mason as most of his contemporaries in the Katipunan were. What is important is General Noriel fought for independence against the Spanish colonial government and has distinguished himself as the leader of Katipuneros who successfully defended Pintong Bato in his hometown of Bacoor, Cavite against repeated attacks from Spanish forces. It is also a convenient choice for Model Lodge as the park is just a short walk away from its temporary Masonic temple.

The activity was conducted in coordination with the Baloc barangay government and in partnership with a local women’s organization. Sto. Domingo mayor Bro. Baby Boy De Guzman who is the incumbent Junior Warden of Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73 also dropped by to meet the brethren.

After cleaning the park, the brethren continued their labors at Model Lodge’s temporary Masonic temple which was given a thorough cleaning and which have another air conditioning unit installed through the kindness of Bro. Fitzgerald Hierco. Birthday celebrant Bro. Lino Carandang, Jr. and his gracious wife Sister Baby served lunch during which the conversation shifted back to the life and times of Gen. Mariano Noriel.

Gen. Mariano Noriel: Hero or Heel?

His brilliant victory at the Battle of Pintong Bato and his being a Caviteno ushered General Noriel into the inner circle of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s Magdalo faction of the Katipunan where he would be half of a tandem with Katipunan “bad boy” Gen. Pio Del Pilar. But both Generals Noriel and Del Pilar switched allegiance to Andres Bonifacio’s Magdiwang faction after the tumultuous Tejeros Convention and were 2 of the 5 signatories of the Naic Military Agreement that declared the establishment a government and army separate from that of General Aguinaldo.

Generals Noriel and Del Pilar after being confronted by General Aguinaldo again switched side to the Magdalo group and abandoned Bonifacio who was later treacherously arrested by General Aguinaldo’s men. As it was, General Noriel presided over the court martial of his former boss who was accused of sedition and treason, and whom he sentenced to die despite the inadequacy of material evidence. General Aguinaldo commuted the death sentence to deportation but was persuaded by Generals Noriel and Del Pilar to stick to the court martial decision. On 10 May 1897, the Great Plebian and his brother were executed in the mountains of Margondon, Cavite.

Not much is written about General Noriel after those events. What is known is he was one of the 5 generals who were with General Aguinaldo as he retreated to the North. He would resurface later when at 6:30 am on 27 January 1915, he and 2 others were hanged after being convicted of murdering a man in a cockpit in Bacoor six years earlier. The Supreme Court of the United States had on appeal reversed the conviction but its verdict came too late for General Noriel.

Postscript

Over lunch, one of the brethren spoke of a scholarly brother who told him that General Noriel is indeed a Mason. There is however no hard evidence to support this. A senior brother also narrated that General Noriel eventually settled in what is now Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija and that one of his descendants eventually married into what would become an influential political clan. But this needs more research and validation.

But whatever has General Noriel done, it cannot be denied that he took the side of independence. He is therefore a patriot. But is he a hero? Perhaps this is best answered by an excerpt from William Wayne’s “A Book of Heroes”: “We must conclude that heroes do not have to be good, or brave, or polite, or industrious, or noble. If they are any of these things, they are them by accident… A hero has some quality that makes him what he is… It is in the memories of his friends, memories of what he did and what he was like, that his heroism resides”.

For 2 days this year, Masonic Districts RIII-D (South Nueva Ecija) and RIII-F (North Nueva Ecija) will test each other in the disciplines of tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball. A BIKATHON, A TREE PLANTING, AND A BIRTHDAY

Aging knees and stomach paunches might have slowed the pace but the brethren from Lodges under the jurisdiction of Masonic District RIII-D still have what it takes to ride the 12 kilometers from Sta. Rosa town to Fort Magsaysay and still have some to spare to plant trees around the watershed of the 7th Infantry Division's (Philippines Army) Bahay Pahingahan. And they were amply rewarded with a feast and give aways prepared by District Deputy Grandmaster Bro. Alan Purisima. On the way home, Worshipful Master Bro. Manolo Mercado served lunch at his home for the Model Lodge contigent. The day ended with a dinner and a fellowship hosted by Bro. Jojit Floro on the occasion of his 27th birthday.

112th INDEPENDENCE DAY AND LODGE VISITATION

Independence Day

The brethren of Model Lodge No. 373 joined Masonic District RIII-D in the commemoration of the Philippines’s 112th year of independence in simple rites led held at the grounds of the Cabanatuan City Hall. As flowers were offered, speeches made, and gun salutes fired under the shadow of the patriot Bro. Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s monument, Model Lodge remember those brother Masons who fought for freedom and earned for the province of Nueva Ecija the pride and honor of being among the 8 rays of the sun in the Philippine flag:

Bro. Gen. Mariano Llanera who started the War for Independence against Spain in Nueva Ecija by attacking the Spanish garrison in Cabiao on 02 September 1896 which is now celebrated as “The First Cry of Nueva Ecija”, and who is honored by the brethren in Nueva Ecija with the establishment of the General Llanera Memorial Lodge No. 168 in Gapan City.

Bro. Gen. Manuel Tinio, the Philippines’ youngest general ever, who led Bro. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s “Tinio Brigade” in liberating the Ilocos provinces from the Spanish colonists and honored by the brethren with the establishment of the Gen. Manuel Tinio Memorial Lodge No. 167 in Guimba.

The brethren of Penaranda’s Masonic Triangle No. 80 namely Bros. Pablo Padilla, Mamerto Natividad Sr., Pantaleon Valmonte, Domingo Cecilio, Marcos Ventus, Epifanio Ramos, Cipriano Sarile, and Teodorico Lagonera who bravely fought for independence and yet remained anonymous in the history books.

Bro. Apolinario Mabini is also honored in the province with the establishment of the Apolinario Mabini No. 237 in Cuyapo --- the town where he was captured by the Americans on 11 December 1899 during the Filipino-American War. Meanwhile in Cabanatuan City, a rundown historical marker is the solemn reminder of where Bro. Gen. Antonio Luna died.

Lodge Visitation

After the Independence Day rites, the Model Lodge contingent led by its Master Bro. Manolo M. Mercado visited Talavera Lodge No. 273 and later Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73 to start its Lodge Visitation program which aims to promote affinity and cooperation with other Lodges in Nueva Ecija.

Incidentally, the Lodges visited had their parts permanently woven in the tapestry of Model Lodge’s history being the wombs which nurtured its birth. Bro. Felicisimo Joson, Jr. who was supposed to be the Charter Master of the Lodge until his untimely demise belong to Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73 along with Bro. Prudencio J. Elegado who became Model Lodge’s Charter Master, Bro. Monico G. Elegado who is considered as “The Grand Old Man” of Model Lodge, Bros. Perfecto S. Parinas, Jimmy C. Obejas, Hermenegildo C. Gines, and Eugenio Ramirez who are all founding members of Model Lodge. Except for Brother Eugenio, all brothers mentioned served as Master of Nueva Ecija Lodge No. 73.

Talavera Lodge No. 273 meanwhile gave the endorsements which enabled Model Lodge to be instituted and finally constituted as a regular Lodge. Bro. Antonino Z. Manabat authored the first endorsement in 2005 and Bro. Arnel M. Landingin the second endorsement in 2007. Brother Arnel along with Bros. Emil Andrew M. dela Rosa II, Lamberto Miranda, Arthuro Ilagan, Narciso B. Cuison, and Jun S. Capulong became founding members of Model Lodge while Brother Antonino later petitioned for dual membership. Except for Brothers Narciso and Jun, all brothers mentioned served as Masters of Talavera Lodge No. 273.

Fittingly enough, Model Lodge’s visitation program commenced on an Independence Day and to those who it considers are its Mother Lodges.

A contingent from Model Lodge No. 373 headed by Senior Warden Marionito Guerrero were on hand to witness this momentous event which culminated in the formal installation of the officers of both Lodges including one of Model Lodge’s own, Bro. Ramon Sabacan, who has been elected as Secretary of Kadanglaan Lodge No. 392.

The province of Nueva Ecija is divided into 2 Masonic Districts namely Masonic District RIII-D covering 16 regular Lodges in South Nueva Ecija and Aurora province, and Masonic District RIII-F covering 11 Lodges in North Nueva Ecija.

Model Lodge is within the jurisdiction of Masonic District RIII-D but its strategic location right the middle of Nueva Ecija province has made it a melting pot with its members coming from both Masonic Districts including Bro. Jose Matutino, Jr. who is the incumbent District Deputy Grandmaster of Masonic District RIII-F.
